My account is missing! - To prevent issues with session logins, don't log into each one right after another. Post something, even if it's marked as visible to only you. Give it a few minutes before logging into the next one. Post a profile photo within 5 days of creating your account. If you're having issues, send a support ticket and admin will be happy to help. I changed my name/relationship and it isn't showing yet! - Due to slowing the site, changes to your profile will now take time to circulate through cache. We posted an announcement on the main page that everyone should see as it's a big orange box, but many are still having issues with this. If you change your name or relationship status, it WILL TAKE longer to show. Do not panic, we have set it this way to keep the site running optimally. Once cache flushes, your changes will appear.
Someone told me they're friends with the admin and/or are staff. Are they? - To view the current administrative team, you can check the About Us page. No one else speaks for the admin team, and will never ask for information about your accounts. If someone is saying they're friends with the admin and are threatening you or asking for personal information, report them, they are not our friends and are not following the TOS of the site.
What words aren't allowed on the site? - After three years, we have relaxed the banned words list. It is now empty. However, this does not mean you can call people derogatory names just for the hell of it, those things are okay in roleplay, but please treat the drivers of the characters with respect. If the trolls find their way back, we'll have to re-add the most used words to the ban list, but for now, we feel it's been long enough that we can go ahead and give it a try without limiting the words that our users can post.
I have blogs on my profile but when I click "Blogs" it says I don't have any - The menu on the profile is for PUBLIC blogs. Your blog must be set to public visibility in order for it to show in that section, otherwise you would have to scroll down your page in order to find them.
I can't tag in a blog - You can't tag in the body of a blog itself, however you can tag in the comments.
My blog keeps getting sorted wrong - It's not wrong. We've asked that people choose ONE category where their blog fits the best, to reduce database issues. There are several categories, and SITE ADMIN is for only site admins. That is for site admin announcements or blogs like this one. No user should ever have blogs in that category. We also move them if it's "rules" and it's in the "bios" section, things like that.
How do I clear cookies/cache? - Usually when we are contacted for an issue, we tell you to clear your cache or browser history. This is because, unfortunately if no one else is having the issue, it is almost always 99% on your end. We can't fix that. We can only offer suggestions and see if something works. Most issues are due to a cookie being held that is an older version of the website or add-on instead of refreshing to a new version daily. BULLYING & REPORTING
I reported something and it's still there. - Chances are, admins reviewed it and it did not meet the criteria to be removed. Or we talked to the person and told them to stop in the future. We try hard not to remove things if we can help it. Fact is most of what is being reported does not violate the TOS here, and usually if it's blatantly a false report we will message you and remind you that those "revenge" reports aren't allowed here. If it's something that was questionable but not against the TOS, we'd simply dismiss the report.
There is no Captcha! - Captcha is 5. Bots are getting smarter, and they can drag a site's available RAM down to nothing if they're allowed to run unchecked. They can recognize equations. If there is an equal sign, they are now equipped to be able to recognize it and scan search engines for an answer. However, 8-3 is missing the equal sign. A human can see 8-3=5 but a bot cannot. If your friends are having trouble, simply refer them to the screenshot we've posted, located here
Where's the chat? - We no longer have a chat system in place on the site. It was dragging the bandwidth down for everyone and didn't work properly. Sending tickets to the chat company didn't help. It was also very expensive to keep going full time when hardly anyone used it. There are tons of free chat systems on the web, some people use AIM, Slack, Skype, Kik, etc. Try a few to see what one works best for you, and group chats can be created easily on most of these as well.
I'm not getting my emails! - If the email verification doesn't show up quickly, please do NOT simply start another account. That bogs up the system. The address to email to have an admin manually approve your account is right in that page explaining that you have to wait for email to be verified. OR, http://www.roleplaylives.net/contact/ Outlook and AOL seem to be the problem children most often, so those would be ones you'd probably have to contact us to manually verify.
How to I invite a friend? - To invite someone, scroll down to the very bottom of the screen. Click "invite", then add their email into the box and click "Send invitations". That's it. The person's email is listed as an invitee of the site and they can put that email right in the box when asked and sign up. If they don't receive the email right away, as long as you entered their email correctly, they can still come to the site sign-in page and register an account, as their email is in the system as soon as you hit "Send Invitation".
I can't delete messages, they pop right back. - This is how the script is set up. In order to use threaded mail, they cannot be deleted by the user. Admins sweep messages that are over 180 days/6 months old.
I have a mail notification but there is nothing there. - This is a "ghost" mail. It's just a glitch in the system generally. Simply open the mailbox and hit "mark all as read" and it will go away.
In group chat someone can't respond - Make sure that everyone in the chat is friends with one another. The site won't let non-friends or blocked members message each other.
I'm missing mail! - Mail older than 6 months/180 days is periodically flushed from the system to protect the integrity of the mail databases. If you roleplay in inbox, please save those roleplays in a blog or text document when you're done, so you don't lose them.
Where's the mobile app? - There currently are no mobile apps for RPL. We tried one, and it messed up a lot of the coding of the site. If in the future we find a developer that has a better product, we will consider it, but as of right now, we have no plans for a mobile app. You can access RPL through the mobile browser on your phones. Anything that can't be done via the mobile website, simply hit "View Full Site" at the bottom of the screen to use the full-featured site.
What names can we use here? - We don't care what your name is here. It's roleplay, go nuts. Please don't use emails, a bunch of numbers, something that confuses people into thinking you're staff here, or anything rude/hateful though. However, just a friendly staff note here. When signing up, or editing your account, you really should have some form of a last name. It isn't required, but as we grow, "unique" first names may not be so unique anymore, and finding each other without a last name or group acronym to separate us will become harder. So, if you would like to avoid the hassle, feel free to go ahead and edit your name field in your account settings. Also note, if you use random characters, or characters with accents, etc, your friends will NOT be able to search for you or tag you, as our search feature does not work with anything other than standard QUERTY text.
My page keeps getting sorted in a place I didn't put it in! - Chances are you are putting it in the wrong place and an admin is helping you by moving it to the proper spot. Please don't continue moving them. If you feel where we put it is wrong, please contact us. We have a lot of groups, we may be sorting it where it doesn't go, but we'll need you to clarify for us that it belongs where you are putting it.
It says someone's wanting to join my group, but nothing is there. - These are "Ghost" Invites. This happens when someone's profile gets deleted before they get accepted. You can't clear these yourself. You'll need to send a support ticket, specifying that you've approved ALL waiting sign-ups except the ghosts, as well as the page ID. This is the number in the address bar. If you're using a vanity URL, go to "Actions"-"Manage" and the number will pop up in the address bar there. We have to manually clear those from the database ourselves.
Why hasn't my group been approved, it's been X amount of minutes? - Group approvals are done by one admin. If you don't read the orange text when you create your group and have it in the wrong category, she cannot approve via mobile and so you will be waiting until she gets online. Do not message or send invites to get admin attention for your group. We approve those as soon as we are online, and cannot do it mobile if things need fixed, so likely you're sending us the messages when we're at the doctors or something and can't help anyways. If you have your group properly sorted and filed, we'll get it as soon as we see it, we promise.
Why can't people can't post in my group or share things from it? - You have your privacy settings set too high. Go through and adjust them until they are able to post/share from the group. If the share isn't showing on their wall to others, they need to adjust their personal privacy settings to allow people to view things they post.
My photo disappeared!- If it had no content on it, it's simply hidden. You can find those in your photo albums. If it had content on it, did it violate the TOS? Did you put it in a photo album, not in a status box?
I can't post photos- Are they too big? Check that files are under 5mb. Did it error out? Try reloading it. If it's a GIF, use https://ezgif.com/optimize to optimize it to make it smaller. If the photo option doesn't show at all, you have more than 1000 photos on your UserID. Delete some, and when you are under 1000, the photo option will pop back up.
My photos aren't in the main feed! - Photos without content have been suppressed from the feed. To make them show, you must add writing content to the photo.
My photo feeds disappeared from my profile! - If you are uploading a lot of photos, you WILL break the feeds for your friends. People WILL unfriend you for this, as it's quite annoying to lose all writing content in the main feed because people upload a ton of photos that are being suppressed. To solve this, after uploading your photos, go to your profile page. Scan through and delete the photo feeds on your profile. The photos remain in your photo albums, but the feed itself is deleted. Do the same if you're tagging a ton of photos, as tags are suppressed as well. If admin get an alert that you broke the feed for your friends, we sometimes will go to your profile and remove those so the feed can be fixed.
My photo's aren't showing at all! - A lot of issues lately with photos are network connectivity issues. Other sites are having them too, there's simply nothing anyone can do. Weird weather patterns and network issues have to resolve themselves and it will straighten out. Until then, if photos are showing as errored out, refresh and it'll pop back once the provider connects again. The servers here aren't going down, the data is safe, it's the wireless connections spread around the world that are having issues. If a photo errored out while you were loading it, simply re-upload the photo.
What size are covers/profiles here? - Cover photos are 700x225. Profile photos work best around 300x300.
It won't let me edit my profile - Several questions are required. If they aren't filled in, you have to fill them in before it will let you save it. Things like the confirmation on being an adult, the birthday, gender. All required items are highlighted with an asterisk in the settings.
Comments and posts are disappearing - Please note that photos and statuses not put in their proper places, IE albums or blogs, can occasionally disappear when cache rotates out. To stop this, put them where they belong.
What kind of profiles can we have here? - We welcome everyone here. Whether you are a book based character, an original character, a book writer, or a fan who wants to keep reading their favorite people, you belong here. It is your choice however, on whether you provide a real name or a character name. Or even what information you want to add to your profile. It is all up to your personal preference and what you are comfortable with. One solution many have used is to have a "real" profile to interact as a fan, and a "writing" profile for their characters. There is no limit to profiles you can create, but each must have a separate email/account.
REGISTERED USER GROUP
I just joined. Why can't I do anything? - Accounts have limited permissions in the beginning. You will be automatically upgraded to the full user group as soon as you upload a profile photo. Again, yes, it's that important here. If you want to be able to use most of the site, you need to add one. If you are getting page not found re-directs while trying to do something, and don't have a profile photo, admins will simply tell you to upload one. We can't fix the redirect without you having a profile photo.
How do I send a support ticket? Who do I send it to? - Please do not send inboxes for admin help to Kaly and Zeth's inboxes. We get to tickets as soon as we can. The Kalypso and Zeth profiles are our writing profiles, not admin profiles. For the quickest service, always send a support ticket.REMEMBER- Please use an email that you can receive mail at! If the response from us bounces, we have no way to fix that!
How to I tag someone here? - To tag someone, post @ and then start typing their name. They should pop up to be tagged. If they don't, there are a few explanations/options. One, make sure they have set their privacy to allow friends to tag them. Two, make sure you are in fact actually friends or that the person you are trying to tag is a member of the group/page if you're attempting to tag in a group or page. Copy what you were writing, and refresh the browser window. Then try adding the tag again, typing their name slower. As we cache up to 500 names at a time, sometimes it can take a few moments to register it. Check with them to make sure they have their privacy settings set to allow tagging. See if they have funky characters in their name, which can mess with the tagging system.
None of those tips work! - If worst comes to worst, there is a “hack” for this. When you can tag someone, you'll see an [x=] followed by a number, their name, and then a closing [x]. Copy that in notepad or something, then go to their profile and in the address bar, simply add THEIR user ID number in. If they're using a vanity URL or you're posting a blog, this obviously won't work, but it's a hack, nonetheless. (For blogs, just tag them in the 1st comment) I've seen groups actually make a blog in the private page with all of their member's user ID numbers in it, so people can use this hack when the tagging goes a bit wonky.
For example, if I can tag Jane Doe, and I get this-
Then I can “hack” that by going to John Doe's profile, seeing his address is
roleplaylives.net/profile-1349. Then, I simply re-write that coding to say[x=1349]John
My name isn't showing. - Our site is not set up for non-qwerty characters. It can use them, yes, but you're going to run into issues. A few we've noticed- Friends won't be able to search for you, unfortunately admin will find it hard as well if you need help. Help including needing your name changed, as it also will randomly throw errors that the name is too long when it isn't. An admin will have to find you and change the name ourselves in the admin control panel. If your name is throwing errors and you've got funky characters in it, you'll need to settle with qwerty characters to function properly on the site or send a support ticket. Your friends will also have trouble tagging you.
